Improve Efficiency in Development by Using Keyboard Shortcuts

xCode is the development environment used to write applications for both Mac OS and iOS devices such as MacBooks, iMacs, iPhones and iPads. To speed up the development of these applications there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that developers can use to quickly access common functions.

I have listed the shortcuts that I use most frequently grouped into the following categories:

File Manipulation

File Manipulation Shortcuts

New Project

⇧⌘N

Opens a new xCode project.
New File

⌘N

Opens the new file dialog within the current project.
New Empty File

^⌘N

Opens a new empty file.
Open File

⌘O

Opens the File Open finder window.
Open Quickly

⇧⌘N

Opens a file quickly. For example, if the cursor is over <UIKIT/UIKIT.h> and ⇧⌘N is pressed, the developer can quickly open the UIKIT.h specification file.
Profile

⌘I

Opens the Profile window to allow the developer to test the current project using the Instruments application e.g. to look for memory leaks.
Edit Scheme

⌥⌘I

Opens the Edit Scheme window.
Close Window

⌘W

Close the current window.
Close Project

⌥⌘W

Close the current project.
Save

⌘S

Save the current file.
Make Snapshot

^⌘S

Make a snapshot of the current project. This is useful prior to making changes that may need to be undone as it allows the developer to revert to a previously stable state.
Print

⌘P

Print the current file.

Undo

⌘Z

Undo the last action.
Redo

⇧⌘Z

Redo the last action.
Cut

⌘X

Cut the selected text.
Copy

⌘C

Copy the selected text.
Paste

⌘V

Paste the previously cut or copied selection.
Paste and Match Style

⌥⇧⌘V

Paste and match the style.
Select All

⌘A

Select all the text in the current file.
Go To Line

⌘L

Opens the go to loine window allowing the developer to jump to a specific line number.
Special Character

⌥⌘T

Opens the special characters window.

Show Fonts

^⇧⌘T

Shows the fonts window.
Shift Right

⌘]

Shifts the line right from the insertion point.
Shift Left

⌘[

Shifts the line left from the insertion point.

Application Shortcuts

Show Preferences

⌘,

Shows the xCode application preferences window.
Hide xCode

⌘H

Hides the xCode window
Hide Other Windows

⌥⌘H

Hides all other windows apart from xCode.
Quit xCode

⌘Q

Quits xCode.

Finding Information

Find in Project

^⇧⌘T

Jumps to search box to search the entire project.
Find in File

⌘F

Jumps to the search box to search the current file.
Find Next

⌘G

Finds the next occurence of a search term.
Find Previous

⇧⌘G

Finds the previous occurence of a search term.
Use selection to Find

⌘E

Uses the current selection as the search term.

Spelling

Show Spelling and Grammar

⌘:

Shows the Spelling and Grammar window.
Check Spelling

⌘;

Carries out a spellcheck on the current file.
